How to use agents safely
The principle is least-privilege plus an undo path.
Grant only the permissions the task needs. If you want an AI to read your calendar to suggest free slots, it doesn't need write access. Most OAuth flows over-request scopes; pay attention to the scopes screen and decline what isn't needed.
For destructive actions, use an explicit approval step. The realistic configuration is 'agent drafts the action, human clicks Send/Delete/Send.' Auto-approve workflows save 5 seconds and risk hours of recovery work.
Keep at least one backup the agent cannot reach. For email, this means archiving important messages to a separate account or downloading them. For files, an offline backup or a cloud account the agent isn't connected to. For code, version control with branch protection.
Audit the agent's recent actions weekly. Most agent platforms log what they did. Read the log; you'll catch surprising behaviour before it becomes destructive habit.
The recovery question: can you actually undo it?
Most consumer services have a trash/recycle bin that holds deleted items for 30 days. That's your first recovery layer.
